If you are reading this on your phone during a bad date, here is what you need right now.

If You Are Uncomfortable

You can leave. Right now. You do not owe an explanation.

  • Text your code word to your safety person — they will call with a fake emergency
  • Say: 'Something came up, I need to go' — leave immediately
  • Go to venue staff if you need help — many have protocols for this
  • Call your rideshare or go to your car
  • Text your safety person that you are safe once you leave

If You Feel Unsafe

Escalate immediately:

  • Go to venue staff and say: 'I do not feel safe. Can you help me?'
  • Call your safety person
  • Call 911 if you feel in immediate danger
  • Do not go to your car alone in an isolated area — ask staff to walk you out

After the Date

Report concerning behavior to the dating app. If laws were broken, file a police report. Talk to someone you trust. You are not overreacting — trust your experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it rude to leave a date without explaining?+

No. Your safety is never rude. You owe a stranger nothing — not your time, not your comfort, not an explanation.
